As a tech teacher and an infernal tinkerer I have always needed a decent set of tools around for maintenance, repair and upgrades. Usually I have gotten by with a set of precision screwdrivers and some hex tools or random bits.

Lately I have been repairing more computer equipment and also tearing down hard drives for their precious components. After stripping a few cheap ill-fitting bits and lacking the correct tools for some hardware, I decided to order the iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit. This kit comes with 70 pieces of hardware and has made my tinkering a breeze.

This toolkit has all the bits and drivers you need for pretty much any modern piece of hardware, plus the specialty “spudgers” for popping open pressure-fitted cases like i-devices. I was able to bring old iPod back to life, which made the cost for this toolkit totally worthwhile.

This kit comes with an anti-static wrist strap so I can demonstrate proper methods for working on electronics to my students and keep my classroom gear operational, saving my school and the taxpayers money in the long run.

Tools like these are invaluable as an investment and demonstrate good practice to the younger ones around us. I have breathed new life into a 6 year old laptop by upgrading memory and increasing storage with this toolkit. For some, new technology is an impulse buy. For others, like myself… getting the most out of what we have is our ultimate self realization (ok, I am exaggerating, but it is a very useful toolkit).
